Forza 2 Motorsports  Microsoft2006Forza Motorsport 2, the sequel to Microsoft Game Studios' award-winning, fully-customizable driving simulator Forza Motorsport , speeds its way onto Xbox 360 .
Buckle up for authentic simulation physics, bone-jarring damage, and photo-realistic graphics, as well as licensed tuning and customization options.
Loaded with over 300 of the world's hottest cars for you to collect, personalize, and race, Forza Motorsport 2 gives you the complete racing experience.***There are racing games, and then there's Forza 2. To lump it in with other titles that happen to feature cars speeding around tracks would be an extreme disservice. In reality, Forza 2 can become something of a lifestyle, as opposed to a game if that's what you're looking for. There's just so much that can be done, it borders on overwhelming. What's better is that the core game is so accessible, and downright fun, that even those of us who aren't obsessive with gear ratios, tire pressure, or spring balance can hop right into a bunch of dream machines without breaking a sweat. At the end of the day, Forza 2 achieves a near-perfect balance of depth, variety, and playability that has never been seen before in the rich history of driving games.

Where to start? That's easy – the cars. There are more than three hundred (!) real-life licensed cars from more manufacturers than you can shake a gear lever at, covering virtually every auto maker across the planet. Got an itch to drive a Porsche or Lamborghini? Always wanted to haul a Ferrari around the track? No problem. Even better, your exploits careening into guardrails, other racers, and various off-road obstacles will cause your incredibly expensive wheels to take major damage. There's no denying that knocking the bumper off of an expensive Japanese import will make many cringe, but it adds to the realistic nature of the game that also comes across in so many other ways. I don't know what Turn 10 did to get manufacturers to sign off on the possibility of their cars getting beaten up so badly, but I like it. A lot.

Single player stretches across two main areas – career and arcade. Career mode begins with some fairly simple "proving ground" trials and stretches all the way to ultra-long endurance races, with plenty of stops in between. Even if you're not the kind of person who races online, there's more than enough action to occupy gobs of your time. The initial races are terribly easy to conquer with a stock vehicle, but as you progress out of the first couple of categories, chances are you'll need a particular car that'll easily dominate the competition performance-wise, or upgrade an existing ride with some parts and tuning tweaks. The arcade mode is a less structured affair that allows you to pursue lap records with any unlocked car on any track, allowing for a dizzying amount of racing combinations that could vacuum up any spare time you may have for months.

Superb multiplayer options and a thriving community await in Forza 2. It may be intimidating to those of us who aren't really "car guys," but the racing is solid, fluid, and relatively devoid of screaming lunatics. Sure, these folks are serious about their racing, but more often than not they'll offer tips to the uninitiated. For those of you who are more skilled – and want to prove it to the world – a shockingly impressive list of global tournaments is available to join, which pit you against dozens of other like-minded speed freaks in a quest for the best time on the planet. Feel like checking out how others are doing? The Forza Motorsport TV mode lets you kick back and watch your colleagues test their mettle (and offers you some hints and tricks on how to take those turns if you pay attention).

Much of this would be less compelling if it weren't for the ridiculously in-depth car tuning and upgrade options. This, my friends, borders on the obsessive-compulsive (and I mean that in the best way). The list of available tuning options is daunting – tire pressure, gears, alignment, roll bars, springs, damping, aerodynamics, braking, and differential are all adjustable. Once you've tinkered with the settings, you get to analyze the benchmarks and take the newly tweaked ride out for a test drive. You can even create different tuning setups and save them to use for different races and conditions. Insane! Each car also has plenty of areas to upgrade with real performance manufacturer parts, spanning engines, exhaust, transmission, differential, tires, springs, and more. Provided you've got the cash, you can easily transform an average Honda into a supercharged speed demon in just a few minutes.

It's not enough for you to deck your ride to the nines with the finest aftermarket performance parts, tuning them to the nth degree. A ridiculously robust design tool allows you to customize your vehicles with detailed paint jobs, vinyls, stickers, and other assorted accoutrements. Some of the creations seen both in-game and on the Forza Motorsport website are simply amazing, clear results of car lovers painstakingly taking the time to implement their bold visions. A photo mode lets you take loving shots of your pride and joy, to be uploaded around the world and shown off over and over again.

About the only real knocks against Forza 2 would be its graphical average-ness and its somewhat steep learning curve. It's not that it looks ugly – it definitely doesn't (not to mention it runs at a smooth-as-butter 60 frames per second). However, compared to more visually enhanced car-based fare like Project Gotham Racing 3, it may come across as a rather ordinary-looking. In addition, if you're not into cars, Forza 2 shouldn't serve as an introduction to the genre. The car handling is ultra-realistic, meaning that the concept of braking properly, easing into and out of turns, and other actual racing tactics are needed to have any modicum of success (even with most of the racing assists turned on).

Ultimately, though, Forza 2 is the best, most powerful racing sim that's ever been put together. Sorry Gran Turismo fans, but for now Forza 2 has you beat, if only for the incredible online and customization features. Unless you're a racing game hater or someone who loathes hitting the brakes, Forza 2 belongs in your Xbox 360 collection.
